People aren’t coming to church like they used to. Why not learn how to bring it to them?

You can’t change everything about today’s church. But you can change how you serve it!

Whether you’re part-time in a congregation or starting your own entrepreneurial ministry, this is the course and community that helps you reimagine ministry through small, concrete changes that have a big impact on the future of church.

Stop doing ‘everything’ and do only what you love

Walk alongside others in ministry instead of being ‘in charge’

Shift from ‘program’ to ‘content’ mindset for delivering Good News

Let go of feeling like money isn’t ‘spiritual’ and find more sustainability

‘There’s got to be a better way!’

This was the call that started Free Range Priest.

I saw so many congregations and clergy struggling with the burden of the declining church system, and feeling the stress of tight budgets, low pay, constant work, and loss of joy.

These faithful people - myself included - wanted nothing more than to serve God and their neighbors, but all the ‘stuff’ of church got in the way.

All I knew when I set out on my own ministry was I was following that voice that told me I could focus on the most meaningful parts of my ministry - prayer and worship, formation and faith practice, connection and community - and this would lead me to a new place of abundance.

Cathie

Since then I’ve given up the stress of trying to hold up the institution, and I’ve rediscovered the joy of ministry I felt when I was first ordained, over 20 years ago.

Now I want to share with you how I got there!

Whether you serve with a traditional congregation or you have your own ministry - or both! - you can reimagine that service by doing less, loving more, and embracing abundance.

You can keep doing ‘everything’ - from the bulletin to the budget to the ‘on call 24/7’ - and doing it for more than one congregation at a time! - while making a minimal salary.

The really bad news - please forgive me - but it’s not helping. The 20th century institutional church system (not the church, but how we ‘do’ church) is declining so rapidly that we can’t hold it up by the force of our will and our faith any longer.

You can walk away from ministry altogether, and get a more stable job that pays better.

But you’d have to shut out that voice that’s calling you to offer your gifts for sharing God’s love with the world. The one that says that nothing is more important than this.

You can keep working insane hours for so little pay that you worry you can’t pay your bills, because you know that others depend on you.

But this will never break the cycle of devaluing our work, which leads to more decline, which leads to working more hours for less pay.

Here’s the Good News

You can serve as you are called - doing the work that feeds your soul and others’, creating faithful communities to serve God and neighbor, and thriving spiritually, emotionally, and financially.

You can ‘be the change’ for the whole church - by reimagining how you serve it, how you follow God’s voice, one small step at a time.

There IS a better way.
We can start bringing church to people.

We can move from ‘maintenance ministry’ - struggling to keep the doors open with dwindling attendance and resources - to serving as we are called:

Meeting people where they are with the love of God and the life of faith.

How?

By reimagining our work, our role, and our connections, we can make small changes in how we serve that have big impacts on our ministry - and the whole church.

I worked with a minister who was serving six - SIX! - small congregations simultaneously, struggling to meet the needs of all these communities, for less than a full-time salary, total.

Today she serves sustainably part-time with one congregation, while also growing her retreat business. She is thriving in ministry and has rediscovered the joy of sharing Good News.

How did she do it? By reimagining what her work is, what her role is, and what her relationship is with the church and the world.

What Members Are Saying

I have learned to set boundaries in my half-time ministry, to keep my ministry from being “full time, half pay” … I have learned that it is important to delegate responsibilities in the church, allowing members to shine and share by doing things like composing and putting together the Sunday bulletins, choosing the hymns, and coming up with ideas for outreach.'

The Rev. Jay Bruno

St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church, Benton, AR

Working with Fr. Cathie, I was able to flesh out ideas to develop a more concrete ministry and actually create something new.

'At this rate (of decline), there will be no one in worship by around 2050 in the entire denomination.'

- The Rev. Dr. Dwight Zscheile

The institutional way we’ve organized the faith has been declining since the mid-20th century. Today it is barely hanging on.

It’s not too late to reimagine the future of church. But it IS too late to pretend we don’t have to.

Start today with one change, one concrete step in your ministry - for the good of the whole church.

This IS for you if…

you’re just starting out in ministry and thinking about how to thrive long (and short!) term.

you have a dream or vision of offering a particular kind of ministry (retreats, coaching, consulting, faith practices, life events, etc…) but don’t know how to get started.

you’re serving full-time hours for part-time pay. (If you’re there every Sunday, you’re serving full-time!)

This is NOT for you if…

you’re on staff at a large, thriving church that has no worries about it’s budget, and you plan to be there for a long time.

you’re at or near retirement and have no plans to serve the church in any capacity in the future.

you really don’t believe the church is undergoing a steep decline and a seismic change.

The future of church is in our hands.

We can meet the challenges of the current church system and focus on bringing the Good News of God’s love in ways that transform lives. To do this, we have to look honestly at what is no longer working, and move courageously towards reimagining our ministry in creative ways.

Bring Church to People helps you do this with confidence and joy.
